The Tucuxi is frequently described (see three references below) as looking similar to the Bottlenose Dolphin
Most dolphins have acute eyesight, both in and out of the water, and their sense of hearing is superior to that of humans
Clicks emitted by dolphins are thought to be exclusively used for echolocation, the dolphin’s amazing ability to gather information about its world through sound
For species with a wide geographical range, environmental degradation may not be as critical, but those species that have a limited or localized distribution may become quite vulnerable
An orca harpooned off the coast of British Columbia in 1964 survived the ordeal and gave people a chance to learn of the animal’s charm and intelligence, moderating the species’ killer reputation
Southwest Airlines, an American airline, has even painted three of their Boeing 737 aircraft in Shamu colours as an advertisement for the parks and have been flying with such a livery on various aircraft since 1988
whales and dolphins may be navigating by the earth’s magnetic field
This behavior, called breaching, is often impressive to human observers
A Bottlenose Dolphin attacks and kills a Harbour Porpoise at Chanonry Point, Scotland
About 20 years ago, there where only about 80 dolphins in the Bahamas
Large animals have low surface to volume ratios, so it is hard for them to cool themselves
Odontoceti may have anywhere from eight to 250 teeth, and their eyesight ranges from poor to excellent
We can now use the target to lead the animal through small steps of a behavior
They nurse, on average, a minimum of two years, but have been observed nursing up to four and a half years
There are many ways to prepare yourself for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of you! The marine mammal field is constantly growing and changing
Ensign Darwin was a Bottlenose Dolphin crew member of seaQuest on the television series seaQuest DSV
Dolphins and many species of toothed whales use their sense of hearing in a very sophisticated behavior known as echolocation
For instance, if a whale splashes its trainer, any of several consequences may follow: the trainer becomes wet, the trainer jumps backward, the crowd cheers, etc
Once an animal learns this foundation, it applies it to learning new behaviors
) As the animal approaches the target the interclick interval also decreases, as each click is usually produced after the round-trip travel time of the previous click is completed
The consensus amongst scientists is that there are two species:
Bottlenose Dolphins (as well as other dolphins) are often trained to perform in dolphin shows
See the cetacean intelligence article for more details
One solitary dolphin, interact with humans more than with any pod
These dolphins are characterized by the conspicuous humps and elongated dorsal fins found on the back of adult members of the species
